our CELEBRATIONS
The most important celebration is Greek Orthodox Easter. This spiritual and emotional event begins on the evening of Good Friday with a candle lit prosession through the streets towards our local church. On Saturday night everyone comes to the local church and joins the mass. When at midnight the church is plunged into darkness, a single flame lights up to light all the candles carried by the visitors; this signifies the resurrection of Christ. After the mass and fireworks, everyone starts celebrating throughout the night with family and friends until early in the morning...
... and on Easter Sunday the celebration continues with lots of grilled lamb, tsipouro, special magiritsa soup, kokoretsi and traditional Greek music and dance. The fasting period, which started 7 weeks earlier on Ash Monday, has ended!
